Sydney Counsellors and Psychologists
What is the difference between a counsellor and a psychologist?
There is a wide range of variation in the qualifications and experience of people who describe themselves as “counsellors”. The term “counsellor” is not a legal one and therefore in theory a person does require any formal training to call themselves a counsellor. Some counsellors have completed brief certificate-level training courses while others have completed University degrees.
In NSW Psychologists have all completed at least 4 years of full-time (or equivalent) University training in psychology plus two years of supervised postgraduate experience.
All the Sydney counsellors in our practice are Clinical Psychologists, which means that not only have they completed the 6 years of training necessary to be registered by the NSW Psychologists Registration Board, they have also completed an additional two years of full-time Masters-level University training in Clinical Psychology.
What can I expect from my initial consultation?
During your initial counselling appointment a Clinical Psychologist will usually ask you questions to get a detailed picture of your problems so that they can develop a psychological counselling plan designed to resolve your problems. You will be asked questions about your current difficulties as well as questions about past experiences which may help in understanding your current problems. After the initial consultation your Clinical Psychologist will often be able to give you a rough indication of how many counselling sessions may be required to reach your counselling goals.
